Poisonous Giant Hogweed located in Ottawa
A poisonous weed that can cause severe burns and permanent blindness in extreme cases has been found in the City of Ottawa.  City staff says Giant Hogweed was located and removed from one park in Ottawa South, as well as private property in the west end.
City officials said they won't disclose the specific locations of the two cases because they worry residents will venture into those areas in search of the plant.
Residents who come across the weed are warned to stay clear of the plant, which can grow from one to 5.5 metres high.  Giant Hogweed is considered a serious health hazard for humans. It can cause severe burns to your skin, and contact with your eyes can cause temporary or permanent blindness.  >>> more

Home butcher wants trial

A Carlsbad Springs man was just being neighbourly when he shared a side of pork with a friend. Now he is going to trial in an Ottawa court on charges under Ontario’s food safety laws. On Thursday, Mark Tijssen, a major in the Canadian Forces, declined the opportunity to plead guilty to four charges under the province’s Food Safety and Quality Act stemming from an investigation that was launched after an anonymous complaint by a neighbour was filed with the Ministry of Natural Resources.  >>> more (Ottawa Sun)

Waste site plan talk of town  (By TOM VAN DUSEN, OTTAWA SUN)

NAVAN — Area MPP Jean-Marc Lalonde has intervened with the Ministry of Environment to get a two-month extension on the public review process for an application for a waste disposal site in Ottawa’s rural east end.

The application is from Carl’s Sanitation Services Ltd. at 5001 Herbert Dr., Navan, for a site which was once a deer preserve, part of the pristine Bearbrook Farms operation.

According to the instrument proposal notice posted by MOE, Carl’s is seeking — under the legal name 171660 Ontario Inc. — a certificate of approval (C A) for a disposal site for non-hazardous waste and a transfer facility.

As a result of Lalonde’s request, MOE has extended the comment period which was supposed to end this week until Sept. 7. Like many of his constituents, the MPP for Glengarry-Prescott-Russell only recently became aware of the application, which was recently the subject of a flurry of e-mails.

E-mails

Many of them originated from nearby resident Tanya Culbertson, who said she’s trying to alert area residents to Carl’s Sanitation’s proposal.

“For those who have property, family who live in, or care about, this area … we need to nip this in the bud before it gets to the next phase of approvals,” Culbertson said, adding the site in question backs up to a golf course.

According to Carl’s submission, the 1.5 hectare site would operate up to 24-hrs.-a day, seven days a week, serving customers in Ontario and Quebec, with sorting and separating of recyclable materials, including everything from residential to demolition waste, municipal, commercial and electronic waste, tires, and even small quantities of asbestos.

Bear Sightings at Harkness Park

There have been some bear sightings in Carlsbad Springs near Harkness Park.  There is by no means any need to be concerned, particularly given the bush-like nature of that area, but just a need for residents to be cognisant of garbage storage, etc. to avoid attracting the animals and getting them habituated to humans -- which is not good for the bears or the humans, overall.  Residents are encouraged to report sightings, turned over waste containers, etc. to the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources bear hotline at 1 866-514-2327.

Construction of the New Carlsbad Springs Community Centre - on schedule.

The Harkness Park in Carlsbad Springs will soon get it's share of construction action.  The long awaited new Community Centre for Carlsbad Springs is about to get built this coming summer.  The City of Ottawa has finalized the planning and the tenders' deadline has been set to June 10th at 3pm.  So far, 6 construction companies have indicated interest.   The list includes Nicolini Construction, Frecon Construction, McDonald Bros Construction and others.   The architect for the centre is the same one as the Shenkman Art Centre that was built in Orléans last year near the Orleans Town Centre.   The new Carlsbad Springs Community Centre will have a gymnasium, a multi-purpose room, a meeting room, a small office and a lobby area.  The centre will be able to accommodate a variety of events in the gymnasium, from private receptions to community  events.  Local recreational sports such as volleyball, basketball, badminton and others will be organized in the new recreational facility.   Opening of the new centre is set for early 2011.  Harkness Park, with it's baseball field, a tennis court, a kids playground area, the new community centre and the surrounding facility will become the sports and leisure hub for the Carlsbad Springs community.

On May 1st, the Carlsbad Springs Optimist Club held its annual roadblock. We are happy to inform you that we, once again, surpassed our goal and raised $2,890.00.  Half the funds will be donated to CHEO to pursue their research on infantile cancer. Thanks to all of you who contributed your spare change!

The Optimist Club is also organizing its annual three-pitch ball tournament, which takes place June 25-26-27.   Since we are unable to use the Harkness Park due to the future Community Centre construction, the tournament will take place at McKendry Park, Andrew Simpson Road, Metcalfe. If you wish to enter a team, please call Gisèle Goyette at 613 822-0679.

The construction of the new Carlsbad Springs Community Centre is on schedule and a ground-breaking ceremony will be held in June.  More details will be posted on the Carlsbad Springs website when we obtain more information.
